Thanks are due to Andrew Blagge for allowing AC and RD to visit the site (and for a nice cup of tea), to Tim Compton for help with the ID of the tooth, to Tom Higham and ORAU for help with the radiocarbon date and to Maria Smith at Creswell Crags for answering our queries regarding information in the online collections database. The radiocarbon date was funded by the Natural History Museum Human Origins Research Fund and the initial site visit by RD was facilitated by the Leverhulme Trust supported Ancient Human Occupation of Britain project. The work of SMB was part of the ‘Human behaviour in 3D’ project funded by the Calleva Foundation. We are also grateful to Lucy Creighton (Museums Sheffield) for permission to reproduce the images in Figures 2 and 3, and for the comments of Abi Pate, Natasha Reynolds and three anonymous reviewers, which helped to improve and clarify the text.en
